Plastic surgery procedures overall are becoming more common in the male demographic. With the number of weight-loss surgeries on the rise, more men than ever before are choosing a tummy tuck or abdominoplasty to tighten and tone their midsection.

Suitable candidates for male abdominoplasty

An ideal male candidate for a tummy tuck is in good medical health and has realistic expectations of what the procedure can and cannot accomplish. Further, the individual will be at his ideal body weight. Not everyone is a good candidate for a tummy tuck. For example, a tummy tuck will not improve the appearance of the mid-section of men with large amounts of intra-abdominal fat located around their organs. These individuals may benefit from diet and exercise and may even consider weight loss surgery.

Male abdominoplasty procedure

There are several techniques to perform male abdominoplasty. The right technique for you will be based upon your anatomy and aesthetic goals. With most abdominoplasty procedures, the abdominal muscles will be tightened and the excess skin removed. The incision is in the lower part of the abdomen, typically below the beltline.

What to expect?

Men will have no hanging or excess skin along the lower belly area, and they will have a much trimmer and more pleasing silhouette. While there is scarring after surgery, these scars can be concealed by most clothing and will fade with time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there different types of tummy tucks?
Yes there are. The differents types are a mini tummy tuck, a full tummy tuck, a fleur de lis tummy tuck and a lower body lift. Each tummy tuck procedure is extremely individual and a thorough assessment is necessary to achieve the most beautiful, permanent results. During the consultation the surgeon will determine which is the best technique for you and exactly what you can expect.
How long does tummy tuck surgery take?
This depends on the type of tummy tuck surgery that will be most suitable for you. On average, a mini tummy tuck will take anywhere from 1 to 2 hours. A full tummy tuck may take 2 to 2 ½ hours. You will be under general anaesthetic during this time. Patients will be required an overnight stay, but this will be discussed with your surgeon during the consultation stage.
What is the recovery time? When can I go back to work?
As with most major surgeries, you should allow yourself an adequate amount of recovery time. Most patients will need to rest for 2 to 4 weeks afterwards, this is shorter if you have only had a mini tummy tuck, usually 1 to 2 weeks. It is advised to take at least one week off from work. All patients are invited for a free follow up consult.
What is a Mommy Makeover?
A Mommy Makeover treats the tummy and the breasts, precisely the problem areas that many mothers have to cope with. The treatments are performed simultaneously, during a single operation. The advantage of combined treatment is that you are not out of action any longer than necessary.
Is a Mommy makeover suitable for me?
A Mommy Makeover is suitable for all mothers, young and old. It is important that you are in good health. A Mommy Makeover gives the best result if you are at your target weight before the operation. If you are too fat, it is best to lose weight first. If you are overweight, you run the risk of complications such as infection, poor wound healing and post-operative bleeding. Your BMI (Body Mass Index) must never be higher than 30.
