When the abdominal muscles are weak and there is excess fat around the stomach, an abdominal correction, also known as a tummy tuck, can tighten the muscles. An abdominal muscle correction is only truly successful if your stomach not only looks beautiful but also feels tighter and firmer. Tightening the abdominal muscles is a very popular procedure at the Wellness Kliniek and can be performed on both men and women.

Abdominoplasty types

Mini Tummy Tuck

A mini tummy tuck, also called mini-abdominoplasty is characterised by the excess skin removal from below the navel. The incision is usually hidden in the bikini line. The abdominal muscles below the navel can be tightened if necessary. Excess fat can also be removed from the lower stomach during the same procedure.

Full Tummy Tuck

The surgeon removes the excess skin and fatty tissue from above and below the navel. The slack abdominal muscles are tightened creating a beautifully flat abdominal wall. The navel is transposed, moved to a more natural position, during a full tummy tuck / full abdominoplasty.

Fleur-de-Lis Tummy Tuck

If you have a lot of excess skin and/or fatty tissue around your stomach a Fleur-de-lis tummy tuck may offer a solution.

Just as in the mini tummy tuck/abdominoplasty, during this procedure, the surgeon makes a horizontal incision above the pubic hairline. A second, vertical incision is also made from the pubic hairline to the ribcage. The scar is stitched in the form of an upside-down T.

During a fleur-de-lis tummy tuck, the navel is almost always moved and stitched back in place. As a result, there is also a visible scar around the navel.

Body Lift

After significant weight loss you could consider having a tummy tuck  + buttocks lift performed in one procedure. We call this procedure torsoplasty or a circumferential body lift.

The surgeon makes an incision around the entire circumference of the body. The exact position of the incisions varies from one person to another. The scar usually runs in a circle from hip to hip.

Suitable candidates for abdominoplasty

People who are in good mental and physical health but have large, unmanageable fat deposits along their waist are good candidates for an abdominoplasty. A tummy tuck is very useful for women who have had a number of children and consequently stretched their abdominal muscles past the point of no return.
If you plan on losing a great deal of weight you should hold off on getting a tummy tuck.
The benefits vary from person to person, so we advise you to discuss your expectations during a consultation. Your surgeon will suggest which treatment is right for you.

Abdominoplasty procedure

The abdominal muscle can be corrected subcutaneously without removing any excess skin. The surgeon inserts fine instruments under the skin via a small incision in the area of the pubis. In this way, he can tighten the slackened abdominal muscle "under the skin", which means there is minimal scarring. Usually, the skin sags at the lower stomach or the entire stomach. Sometimes there are stretch marks. If so it's then best to remove some excess skin to achieve the most beautiful result.

The procedure is different for each type of tummy tuck. During a consultation, your surgeon will explain the most suitable procedure for you.

What to expect?

Tummy tucks, whether mini or extended, produce excellent results for patients with weakened abdominal muscles or excess skin. And in most cases, the results are long-lasting.

If you’re realistic in your expectations and prepared for the consequences of a permanent scar (though minimal) and a lengthy recovery period, a tummy tuck may be just the answer for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there different types of tummy tucks?
Yes there are. The differents types are a mini tummy tuck, a full tummy tuck, a fleur de lis tummy tuck and a lower body lift. Each tummy tuck procedure is extremely individual and a thorough assessment is necessary to achieve the most beautiful, permanent results. During the consultation the surgeon will determine which is the best technique for you and exactly what you can expect.
How long does tummy tuck surgery take?
This depends on the type of tummy tuck surgery that will be most suitable for you. On average, a mini tummy tuck will take anywhere from 1 to 2 hours. A full tummy tuck may take 2 to 2 ½ hours. You will be under general anaesthetic during this time. Patients will be required an overnight stay, but this will be discussed with your surgeon during the consultation stage.
What is the recovery time? When can I go back to work?
As with most major surgeries, you should allow yourself an adequate amount of recovery time. Most patients will need to rest for 2 to 4 weeks afterwards, this is shorter if you have only had a mini tummy tuck, usually 1 to 2 weeks. It is advised to take at least one week off from work. All patients are invited for a free follow up consult.
What is a Mommy Makeover?
A Mommy Makeover treats the tummy and the breasts, precisely the problem areas that many mothers have to cope with. The treatments are performed simultaneously, during a single operation. The advantage of combined treatment is that you are not out of action any longer than necessary.
Is a Mommy makeover suitable for me?
A Mommy Makeover is suitable for all mothers, young and old. It is important that you are in good health. A Mommy Makeover gives the best result if you are at your target weight before the operation. If you are too fat, it is best to lose weight first. If you are overweight, you run the risk of complications such as infection, poor wound healing and post-operative bleeding. Your BMI (Body Mass Index) must never be higher than 30.
