Suitable candidates for a circumcision
Circumcision is suitable for males experiencing medical problems associated with the foreskin of the penis, or for adult males for aesthetic reasons.
Circumcision is the surgical procedure to remove the retractable fold of skin that covers the end of the penis. The procedure is carried out for religious, cultural, or medical reasons, including where the foreskin is too tight or becomes infected.
Circumcision is suitable for males experiencing medical problems associated with the foreskin of the penis, or for adult males for aesthetic reasons.
Circumcision is normally performed using intravenous sedation. During the procedure the foreskin is shortened considerably and leaves the tip of the penis half or even fully exposed. Circumcision (removal of the foreskin) takes half an hour to perform. After an hour or two the anaesthetic wears off and complete sensation is returned to your penis.
Following circumcision, it is best to take a few days to rest. The penis can be swollen and reddened or blueish for about a week. In the first few days following surgery, you may experience a burning sensation while urinating. For the first three days following circumcision, we advise you to change the bandage each time you urinate. Then it is best to take a daily bath in lukewarm water without any soap. We advise you to wear supportive underwear (no boxer shorts) and to keep the penis pointing upwards towards the navel to reduce the swelling more quickly. If necessary you can take paracetamol or apply local anaesthetic cream if you experience any pain. After a couple of weeks, a protective layer will have formed on the tip of the penis and the uncomfortable feeling will be gone. It is best to wait between three to four weeks after the procedure before swimming or playing any sport again. The stitches used during circumcision will dissolve by themselves and fall out after 7 to 14 days. Between four and six weeks after the procedure sex and masturbation is possible once more.
During your consultation, you will meet the surgeon who will perform your surgery. The consultation will start with you expressing your desired result.
Your surgeon will then perform a medical examination to assess whether you are a suitable candidate.
During your consultation you can expect:
Depending on the type of treatment, your surgery will be performed under intravenous sleep sedation, local or general anaesthesia. More information about all types of anesthesia can be found on this page.
Your anaesthetist will insert a needle into your arm through which the medication will be injected. It takes about 10 seconds to take effect.
After surgery, incisions are closed with dissoluble sutures and necessary plasters and bandages are applied. When general anaesthesia or intravenous sleep sedation is applied, the anaesthetist will start the wake up process and you will be transferred to the recovery area where you will be closely monitored.
After surgery, you will be taken to the recovery area where you will be closely monitored by our medical staff. If the surgery took place under general anaesthesia or intravenous sleep sedation, your bodily functions will routinely be monitored whilst you start to awake.
Once you are fully conscious, you will be taken to your room where you can continue resting until you feel fit to go home.
Some surgeries require patients to stay overnight.
For optimal healing and aesthetic outcome, it is important to strictly follow your surgeon’s post-operative guidelines. These guidelines may vary from patient to patient.
